ERP Implementation Strategy: Why Q4 should not be underestimated

For many businesses, the final months of the year (October to December) feel like the last stretch — teams are busy closing projects and preparing for the holiday season. On the surface, Q4 might seem like the worst time to take on a major initiative like an ERP project. In reality, it can actually be one of the best times to begin.

Choosing the right ERP system is not a quick task. It takes time to gather requirements, review different solutions, and involve the right people across the business. This stage alone can run for several months, which is why Q4 is such a useful starting point. The quieter weeks around the holiday period can give space for proper evaluation, putting you in a strong position to move into the new year with clarity and direction.

Why Timings Matters?

ERP is not simply a piece of software. It is a long-term investment in how your business operates and grows. The way you approach choosing the right solution can make or break your operational success.

Q4 can naturally lend itself to these kinds of projects. According to West Won’s dataset of Ltd. PLC and LLP companies in the UK, 24.48% of UK companies’ financial year-end (FYE) is in March, whilst another 24.34% fall in December. This means that during Q4, just under 50% of companies in the UK are in the process of, or have finalised their budgeting for the next financial year. The year-end process often shines a light on inefficiencies and data challenges that an ERP system can help resolve. And for many organisations, there is just enough breathing room at this time of year to focus on planning without disrupting daily operations.

The Selection Process

The first stage of an ERP journey is selection. This means taking a step back to fully understand your current processes, your business goals, and the areas that need improvement.

From there, you can begin to review the solutions available. This often involves shortlisting vendors, sitting in on demonstrations, and testing how the system performs in real-life scenarios. Costs, scalability, and long-term fit all need to be assessed. Just as important is securing the support of leadership and key users, because their buy-in will be central to adoption.

Q4 is an ideal time to focus on this stage, when the day-to-day pace slows and decision makers are more available to engage.

Where To Focus Attention

A successful Q4 is about groundwork rather than rushing into configuration. The most valuable activities during this period include building awareness among teams, reviewing and mapping current processes, and ensuring ERP investment is properly captured in the next year’s budget.

It is also a good time to meet potential implementation partners, understand their approach, and confirm whether their style is the right fit for your organisation. These early conversations will save time later and ensure you are well prepared for the next steps.

Making Q4 Count

The key to making progress is to be realistic. Q4 should be about planning, preparing, and selecting rather than going live. Use the holiday period to run workshops or arrange vendor demonstrations. Create a roadmap that starts with selection in Q4 and moves into configuration and data migration in Q1. Most importantly, secure early support from senior leaders so the project begins with strong sponsorship.

The launchpad for ERP success

Q4 is too often dismissed as the holiday quarter. In practice, it offers a valuable chance to build momentum and prepare the business for ERP success. By taking the time to evaluate vendors, confirm budgets, and bring people on board, you enter the new year ready to move forward at pace.

Rather than waiting until January, use Q4 as the launchpad. The work you do now will pay off in faster results, smoother adoption, and a system that is ready to support your growth from the very start of the year.
