Navigating Your ERP Journey from On-Premise to the Cloud

Making the move from an on-premise ERP system to the cloud is a big step—and it’s often a mix of excitement and anxiety. The potential benefits are clear: more agility, easier maintenance, and cost efficiencies. But to make the most of that potential, your transition needs to be planned carefully, with a good grasp of what your business really needs. Here are some of the key things to think about as you prepare for that journey.

1. Take Stock of Where You Are

What’s Driving the Move?

Start by getting really clear on why you’re looking to migrate. Are you aiming to cut down on IT overheads? Want to scale more easily? Or maybe you’re after more advanced features like AI or real-time data insights? Your goals will shape everything from the kind of cloud setup you choose to the pace of your migration.

Are You Technically Ready?

Audit your current systems—hardware, software versions, customisations, and all the integrations (think CRM, e-commerce, manufacturing software). Mapping this out now will save you a lot of stress down the line.

2. Pick the Cloud Setup That Fits

Public Cloud

Public cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud offer flexibility, scalability, and predictable costs. They’re great for fast deployment and reducing the hassle of patching or maintaining infrastructure. The trade-off? You won’t have as much control over the nitty-gritty.

Private Cloud

Need tighter control over data or compliance? A private cloud—either in your own data centre or through a managed host—could be the answer. It’s customisable but tends to come with more cost and complexity.

3. Map Out the Migration

Clean Your Data

This is a golden opportunity to fix messy data. The cloud won’t solve existing data problems, so take the time to clean, deduplicate, or archive anything outdated.

Phased or All-In?

Some businesses roll things out in phases—starting with finance, then procurement, and so on. Others go for the full switch all at once. The best approach depends on your business culture, how risk-averse you are, and how complex your current systems are.

Get Integration Right

Figure out how your new ERP will link with other platforms. APIs usually make things smoother, but it’s worth double-checking compatibility and data flows before going live.

4. Get People Onboard

Involve the Right Teams Early

Bring in key players from finance, IT, supply chain, and HR early in the planning stages. The more people understand how the new system will help them—like reducing manual work or speeding up reporting—the more buy-in you’ll get.

Targeted Training

Keep training relevant to each group. Hands-on sessions help people get used to new processes without feeling overwhelmed.

Communicate Often

Keep everyone in the loop with regular updates—on timelines, progress, and what’s coming next. Good communication keeps things calm and builds trust.

5. Test, Optimise, and Launch

Don’t Skip Testing

User acceptance testing (UAT) is essential. Test functionality, performance, and data integrity in a sandbox environment first. Catching problems early means a much smoother go-live.

Check Performance and Security

Even with top-notch cloud providers, it’s worth running your own performance and security checks. Make sure your disaster recovery plans are up to date too—better safe than sorry.

Celebrate and Reflect

When you go live, take a moment to acknowledge the hard work it took to get there. Then, review what went well and what could be improved—this is key to continuous improvement.

Moving from on-premise ERP to the cloud isn’t just about changing where your system sits—it’s about preparing your business for the future. With the right mix of planning, people, and process, you can reduce risks, unlock new capabilities, and set the stage for smarter, more agile operations.
